Masterclass DVDs

I just wanted to bring to your attention that last year Jones Library purchased some 30 DVDs of masterclasses by renowned artists. These are published by the Masterclass Media Foundation, and they include artists such as Emanuel Ax, Maxim Vengerov, Thomas Quasthoff, Evelyn Glennie, and more. Repertoire ranges from Bach to Messiaen to Minoru Miki. Many of the classes were conducted at the Royal Academy and the Verbier Festival. Metaphysics of Notation

If you like cutting-edge music, you might want to know that we recently received Metaphysics of Notation, a DVD that presents a work of that name by Mark Applebaum. The work consists of seventy feet of graphic notation that was suspended on panels around the atrium of an art museum at Stanford. Forty-five performers (and ensembles) were invited to come and interpret the notation into sound however they saw fit. The DVD includes images of the score, a twenty-minute documentary, and excerpts from each of the performances. The call number is DVD 11-001.

A curious little book

While weeding the book collection, I came across Sigmund Spaeth's Great Symphonies: How to Recognize and Remember Them (1952 ed.). Spaeth's solution to the problem of remembering themes is to provide "lyrics" for each. So for the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Sixth, you can in future hear "Hither, come hither, and join our hymn of praise; the shepherds in gladness their thankful voices raise". Or you can run away screaming. There are hundreds of such examples. I decided to keep this book as a "priceless" artifact of another era's approach to music appreciation. Philip Glass

During weather like this, I might typically be listening to Winterreise or Nantucket Sleighride (by the 70s rock group Mountain). This week, I've been listening to Philip Glass, something I don't often do. There's a little of his music in Naxos and DRAM, but if you want a better selection, check out the 10-CD set on Nonesuch titled Glass Box. The call number at Jones is CD 010-075 (http://198.30.145.251/record=b3182705~S3). I've been listening to disc one, Music in Contrary Motion and Music with Changing Parts, and it seems very well-suited to the gray Cleveland skies.

Remember that when I say "check out", I mean as in "take it with you" to your dorm or apartment. Students can now borrow CDs for three days, with renewals possible. Enjoy.
