A curious little book

While weeding the book collection, I came across Sigmund Spaeth's Great Symphonies: How to Recognize and Remember Them (1952 ed.). Spaeth's solution to the problem of remembering themes is to provide "lyrics" for each. So for the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Sixth, you can in future hear "Hither, come hither, and join our hymn of praise; the shepherds in gladness their thankful voices raise". Or you can run away screaming. There are hundreds of such examples. I decided to keep this book as a "priceless" artifact of another era's approach to music appreciation. You can find it at MT125.S74 1952.

Philip Glass

During weather like this, I might typically be listening to Winterreise or Nantucket Sleighride (by the 70s rock group Mountain). This week, I've been listening to Philip Glass, something I don't often do. There's a little of his music in Naxos and DRAM, but if you want a better selection, check out the 10-CD set on Nonesuch titled Glass Box. The call number at Jones is CD 010-075 (http://198.30.145.251/record=b3182705~S3). I've been listening to disc one, Music in Contrary Motion and Music with Changing Parts, and it seems very well-suited to the gray Cleveland skies.

Remember that when I say "check out", I mean as in "take it with you" to your dorm or apartment. Students can now borrow CDs for three days, with renewals possible. Enjoy.

Incidentally, I posted some pictures of the library under renovation to the Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jones-Music-Library-Baldwin-Wallace-College/127938017226780). It's pretty cool to see what's being done there, with walls torn down and the like.

Happy Thanksgiving,

A few new scores

Just a few highlights from our most recent contemporary scores approval plan:
Songs by John Duke, Peter Maxwell Davies (for boy treble or soprano), Milton Babbitt, and Judith Weir; a violin concerto by Magnus Lindberg; Hue and Cry for wind orchestra by Steven Stucky; a piano trio by Aulis Sallinen; and Earle Brown's Corroboree for 2 or 3 pianos, which features such techniques as fingernail pizz and forearm clusters.

We have also begun posting lists of new acquisitions at our Web site. Right now, lists for September and October are available.

Classical Scores Library

One of the things I hope to do with the blog is to highlight some of our more significant resources. Today, I wanted to make sure that you're aware of Classical Scores Library, an online collection of scores (and parts) from Alexander Street Press. We've had a subscription for a year or two, but it has grown substantially in the last few months. What was once (in my view) a kind of free pot-sweetener with the online version of the Garland Encyclopedia is now a large, significant collection that provides access to 25,000 scores from anywhere you might be. It's certainly not going to replace our print collection, but it's a valuable adjunct. For example, the collection includes 37 scores by Mahler (including all the symphonies), 939 by Mozart, 322 by Schutz, and 48 by Sculthorpe. The interface is not perfect, but it does allow you to search and browse. I believe the scores are all stored as PDFs, and you can print as much as you want.

If you're on campus, you can simply go to http://shmu.alexanderstreet.com/. If you're off campus, start at http://www.bw.edu/academics/libraries/jones/. Please let us know if you have any questions or problems.
